May 13, 1924 - December 7, 2019

Arlene H. Metzler Hess of Lititz, PA, passed away peacefully December 7, 2019, at Landis Homes, aged 95, ending a rich, fulfilling life. An energetic, creative woman with a strong, abiding faith, Arlene was a lover of life, people, nature, family, farming, and music, playing the piano and marimba.

Born May 13, 1924, near Farmersville, PA, Arlene was the eldest daughter of Harvey M. and Bertha (Herr) Metzler. She was a 1942 graduate of East Lampeter High School. On July 20, 1946, she wed John D. Hess, who preceded her in death. Through their nearly 67 years of marriage, John and Arlene related as a team: farming and gardening together; traveling across North America; supporting each other's interests; and making tons of soap for Mennonite Central Committee. They lived in Lancaster County except for residing five years in Rockingham Co., VA, during John's last years. Arlene returned to Lancaster to live at Landis Homes.

Arlene was baptized at Strasburg Mennonite Church. Later she was an active member in Landis Valley Mennonite, Mt. Clinton Mennonite, and Landis Homes churches. Arlene enthusiastically, ardently, and joyfully volunteered in a variety of organizations, including Lancaster Mental Health Board, PTA, women's executive committee of the Eastern Region of the Mennonite Church, and various activities in the churches she attended, pioneering the inclusion of Mennonite women in leadership. Frequently involved in the birthing and early years of faith-based efforts, she served on committees for sending Christian Home Builders literature to new mothers, planning retreats for women, and establishing the women's auxiliary at Landis Homes, where she initiated the annual Fellowship Day chicken barbecue. She collaborated with Miriam LeFever to co-edit the Black Rock Auxiliary cookbook, Family Favorites, and with Mary Previte to create quilts for the MCC PA Relief Sale Auction. John and she welcomed many international guests into their home and sponsored refugees from Vietnam and Laos.

She was employed as a cafeteria supervisor of children at Neff School, Manheim Township, and as coordinator of volunteers at Mennonite Home, and Landis Valley Farm museum, where she also volunteered as an artisan quilter.

She is survived by her three children: Susan H. Guengerich (Phil), Harrisonburg, VA; Jean Horst (James E., Jr.) Harrisonburg, VA; Fred Hess (Rebecca S. Mann) Lancaster, PA; grandchildren: Melani G. Novinger (Curtis); Gail L. Guengerich; John Guengerich (Erica); Jason Horst (Veronica Chapman Smith); Monica H. Rhodes (Brian); Melissa H. Kinman (Matthew); Kimberly Hess (Kevin Burchfield); Laura Hess (fiancé, Mike Hamill); 8 great-grandchildren; and a sister: Dorothy Jean Hess (Andrew B.), and sister-in-law Mary Jane Brenneman;

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister Evelyn M. Groff.

A Celebration of Life will be held at West Bethany Chapel, Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Rd., Lititz, PA 17543, on December 27, 2019 at 4:00 PM with visitation beginning at 3:00. A private interment occurred at Landis Valley Mennonite Cemetery.

Hess, Ida M. Eshleman, 89, entered into the presence of Jesus on Tuesday (Feb. 5, 2019) at home, surrounded by family.

Mrs. Hess was born on Aug. 24, 1929 in Pequea Township, Pa.to Howard M. and Fannie (Martin) Eshleman. On Aug. 1, 1953, in New Danville, Pa., she married Lester H. Hess, who predeceased her on Oct. 4, 2014. Ida devoted her life to the care of her husband and family.

Ida is survived by three sons, Lester (Rachel) Hess, Jr. and Timothy (Rachel) Hess, both of Independence and Jay (Sandra) Hess of Andover; four daughters, Arlene (William) Eddy of Belmont, Kathy (Roy) Sommers and Lois (Eugene) King, both of Harrisonburg, Va. and Yvonne (Nathan) Reber of Independence; a brother, John (Jo) Eshleman of Willow Street, Pa.; three sisters-in-law, Arlene Eshleman and Verna Hess, both of Pa. and Joyce (Lee) Mummau of Ohio; 30 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her husband of 61 years, she was predeceased by three brothers, Clayton (Kathryn) Eshleman, Chester Eshleman and Howard Eshleman; four sisters, Barbara (Jacob) Lefever, Mabel (Jacob) Harnish, Cora (Paul) Kilheffer and Ruth Eshleman; two brothers-in-law, Harold Hess and Benjamin Hess; two sisters-in-law, Elsie (Earl) Swartzentruber and Miriam Hess; a grandson, Kendall Hess and a grand-daughter-in-law, Sharla King.

Ida loved her family, church family and neighbors. In many ways, through her acts of kindness and hospitality, her neighbor was anyone with a need. She was very supportive of the mission and ministry of her husband. Where he went, she was glad to be by his side. She was a member and attended Phillips Creek Mennonite Church where her husband pastored for many years.

Between her and Lester, Ida was the humorous one. She enjoyed the reaction of telling a funny story. To her, laughter was truly good medicine. It was natural and first nature for Ida to overlook a weakness, be forbearing in a difficult situation or unconditionally accepting. She was always appreciative of the people around her and the circumstances she found herself in. In her later years, she enjoyed a good game of Scrabble or working a jigsaw puzzle with her children as they took over the role of caregiver.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Gospel Fellowship Church, 4996 Hood Road in Belmont. The funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. also at the Gospel Fellowship Church. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Cemetery in Belmont.

Hooley, Wesley Walter, “Wes,” age 97, passed away on February 8, 2019 on the land he transformed from desert to productive farm land in Indian Cove, Idaho. He was born November 21,1921 in Jet, Oklahoma to Alta and Paul Hooley. Wes and Doris Isabel King were married on August 25,1946. They made their home on the family farm in Indian Cove. They were married 67 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Hooley, his parents Alta and Paul Hooley, and 4 siblings: Elsie Mann, LeRoy Hooley, Paul Ervin Hooley, and Mylin Hooley. He is survived by one sister, Marilyn (Ed) Miller, a sister-in-law, Fern Hooley, his 7 children: Judith (Wendell) Unrau, Maxine (Rick) Peirson, Dale (Diana) Hooley, Donna (Robert) Detrich, Gary (Lois) Hooley, Gene (Mary Esther) Hooley, and Sharon Hooley; 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Wes spent his life as a farmer on the homestead that his parents began in 1938. After his father died, he and his mother and brothers began the irrigation project; obtaining a government grant, blasting and digging the canal, and installed the pump which still serves the west end of Indian Cove. Wes was a hard worker, an innovator and inventor. He created his own 14-foot front-end mowing machine prior to hay swathers, leveled his farm mixing the drifting sand with the clay, and was one of the first to change from gravity irrigation to sprinklers. His math skills were appreciated as Ditch Rider for the West End farmers for 45 years.

Wes was active in the Community Mennonite Church, helping with its construction in 1950 from timbers salvaged from the Anderson Ranch Dam construction, and served as treasurer for many years. He had a rich baritone voice and loved to sing. He was keenly interested in and supported Creation Science research. As a young bachelor, Wes registered as a Conscientious Objector during World War II, and after the war, he volunteered through Mennonite Central Committee (a relief and service organization) to help take 700 horses by ship to Poland under the first United Nations Relief efforts. These men and those who followed were later referred to as 'Seagoing Cowboys.' In his later years he traveled to Israel to help with archaeological digs, and tour with his wife, and he made trips to China and Russia to distribute Bibles.

Wes' life displayed his natural abilities as an engineer and farmer. He valued most his family, showing continuing love for the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and his repeated requests for family reunions. He has passed on a legacy of self-sufficiency, travel, support for missions, love of music, and life-long learning.

Wes' funeral will be held at the Rost Funeral Home in Mountain Home, Idaho, on Wednesday, February 13, 2019. A viewing is at 11:00 am, and the service at 1:00 pm. The family would like to thank Treasure Valley Hospice who gave wonderful support at the end of his life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heifer International (an outgrowth of the Seagoing Cowboys project.)

As a conscientious objector, John spent the war years serving in Civilian Public Service in Mulberry, FL area where he served on a Public Health hookworm control project. His unit was assigned to serve in an impoverished black & white community where they constructed and installed a large number of sanitary toilets throughout the community. When the war was over John completed his enlistment by serving as a Seagoing cowboy. Seagoing cowboys tended livestock on ships sent to war ravaged countries during 1946 after the hostilities ended. John went on 4 tours transporting impregnated cattle and horses to Germany. This Seagoing program has evolved into the Heifer Project.

After completing this Seagoing cowboy service, John took his beloved middle-aged, Aunt Anna on tour through southern United States, ending in California. Anna decided to fly home to get married, leaving John in California. After doing several jobs, he ended up teaching at a school in Earlimont, CA where he met a fellow teacher, Carolyn Peterson. They were married 6 months after they started dating.

John completed his studies at Eastern Mennonite during summers, finally graduating in 1951. In 1961, he took his family of 7 to Boulder, CO to obtain his MBS at University of Colorado.

When he retired from Millersville University in 1988, he was awarded Associate Professor, Emeritus status.

John spent many semester breaks in Switzerland, researching his Horst ancestors. He learned to speak PA Dutch in his grandparent's home, and German in high school. He was fluent in German and used those skills as a young man during the Seagoing cowboy breaks, as well as his numerous trips to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

He loved to travel and meet people of many cultures. John & Carolyn spent 6 months on a sabbatical, visiting Universities all around the world, on a special ticket that provided air transportation as long as they traveled only east.

After retirement, John & Carolyn became snowbirds and loved spending winters at their cottage in Pinecraft Community in Sarasota, FL. John taught his children to love to camp, hike and travel. Hikes often included a science lesson, looking for fossils, lichens or looking for trap-door spiders. A hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon with Susie and Jon in 1964, included a discussion of the time periods of the rocks, and discovery of various lizards.

Hurst, Gerald R. “Tony,” died peacefully at the Greenhouse Village Strawberry Fields Home on February 14th, 2019 in Goshen, Indiana at the age of 75 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Tony was born on September 14, 1943 in Medina County Ohio to Moses W. and Mary S. Hurst. He graduated from Goshen College in 1965 with a Bachelor of Arts in education. He also received his master’s degree in education with a specialty in geology from IUSB. After graduating from Goshen College, he married Charlotte Weldy and remained married to her until her death in 1985.

Tony started his teaching career at Middlebury Elementary in 1965. The following year, he and Charlotte began a two-year voluntary service term in San Juan, Puerto Rico and St. Petersburg, Florida. Upon their return, Tony began his career of teaching middle school students in Middlebury Community Schools. He led the Heritage Middle School Science department for thirty plus years. Tony was also an intramural basketball coach, rocket club sponsor, Science Olympiad coach and mentor for 3 generations of students in the community.

For Tony, the pinnacle of his forty-year teaching career was being involved in a collaborative team approach with other department leaders. He considered it the “dream team” and was proud of the impact it had for his students. Another way in which Tony made an educational impact was through his volunteering with the Elkhart County center for community justice victims impact panel.

On July 11th, 1987 he married Glenda Gautsche on the farm where she was born and raised, near Archbold, Ohio. They were happily devoted to each other for over 31 years until his passing.

Tony was an accomplished singer and played the banjo and guitar. He often shared his love of music with his students in the classroom. In his retirement, Tony continued to do what he loved by substitute teaching at Bethany Christian Schools and as an adjunct professor of elementary science methods at Goshen College. Tony also administered the rocks and minerals testing for the Goshen College Regional Science Olympiad for several years.
